Propecia is a synthetic or man-made antiandrogen that works by inhibiting type II 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme which converts testosterone to DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. Propecia is a proponent of Finasteride and was primarily given the go ahead by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1992 under the brand name Proscar, which is a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. In 1997, the FDA gave the thumbs up for finasteride to be used for the treatment of male pattern baldness, and marketed under the brand name Propecia.

There was a 5 year study conducted targetimg men afflicted with boh mild and moderate hair loss, and 48% of those who were succumbed to Propecia treatments showed promising results, with hair re growth increasing steadily. The rest of the 42% showed no further decline in hair loss. Propecia is only effective for as long as it’s taken and used. When therapy is ceased, the hair grown and maintained dissipates within 6 months to a year. In scientific explorations, Propecia was shown to work on the crown and hairline regions, but the best results were displayed in the area of the crown.

Unfortunately, Propecia has been found to be ineffective for women experiencing hair loss. The good news is that Propecia propagators were mainly tested on women who are post-menopausal, whose hair loss is probably caused more by lack of estrogen rather than sensitivity to DHT. Professional physicians may prescribe Propecia for women, but also accompanied by birth control compounds to assure that the female patient does not become pregnant.

Studies comparing the use of both Propecia and placebo indicated that Propecia users using the product for five years acquired an average of 277 more hairs in a 1 inch diameter circle area as compared to those taking placebos. Propecia is considered to be one of the best hair growth and hair maintenance products around based on these clinical surveys.

Adter the first initial year of Propecia usage, the ones which show promising results recorded an average of over 90 hairs in the balding region. In the second year, the freshly grown tresses showed a decrease to 80 and by the third year, the amount went down to 60. Take into factor that Propecia is still considered the ‘king’ of hair re growth products compared to similar ones in the market. There is no other hair loss treatment that has been tested so efficiently for a long period of time.

For more youthful men who are just beginning to experience hair loss, the 5 year clinical studies is indeed great news. Men who lose their hair today and able to re grow it by using Propecia would not be possible 30 years ago. The five year clinical study shows improved maintenance and hair growth for all Propecia users. The trick here is to have patience and not expect miraculous results after using the product for just a while.

For men who want to re grow their hair, a suggested combination of Propecia, Nizoral, Rogaine and Tricomin could be the best options, as these products are supported by reliable clinical trials.
